Valtreixal Mine (Calabor): environmental permit refused

The Valtreixal mining project, in Calabor, in the Spanish province of Zamora, planned an open-pit operation a few kilometres from the Portuguese border, next to Montesinho Natural Park.

Movimento UIVO, created in 2021 by residents on both sides of the border, mobilized against the project, warning of contamination risk to watercourses shared between Portugal and Spain.

The regional government of Castile and León refused the project's environmental permit, a result the movement considers significant for the whole cross-border region, while it remains alert to possible appeals from the developer.
