Lithium mine in Covas do Barroso

British company Savannah Resources wants to open an open-pit lithium mine in a centuries-old farming area, classified as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System by the FAO. Covas do Barroso has resisted the project for eight years.

From August 6 to 10, 2026, between 700 and 800 people take part in the Camp in Defence of Barroso, organized by Unidos em Defesa de Covas do Barroso with support from A Sachola, Disgraça and Jornal Mapa.

In parallel, ClientEarth and Unidos em Defesa de Covas do Barroso brought the case to the Court of Justice of the European Union, questioning the legality of the project's environmental licensing.
